Itinerary

Below is the itinerary currently planned for the trip. All of our trips include fully guided tours, and are all-inclusive.

What does all-inclusive mean? Here is what is included:

  • All meals (with the exception of lunch on your free day)
  • All wine and zivania tastings
  • All cooking demonstrations with chefs
  • All ground transportation

  • Cruise on the Mediterranean

EVENTS & DESTINATIONS
Travel Day Leave for Cyprus
Depart Charlottesville and collectively travel to IAD. Overnight on the plane.
Day 1 Arrival

Arrive into Larnaca, unpack, unwind and dinner at the hotel.

Day 2 Paphos

We travel to the Western and Southernmost tip of the island

  • Visit with local artists at The Place – meet local icon makers, glass painters, sculptors
  • Hike around Aphrodite’s Rock or Petro Tou Romiou (birthplace of Aphrodite)
Day 3 Paphos

The entire city of Paphos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

  • Archaeological site of Kolossi (fortified castle of the Hospitaliers, production of sugar and Commandaria in medieval times)
  • Visit Aphrodite Delights to learn how Loukoumiou is made (Turkish Delights – or as they call it in Cyprus – “Cyprus Delights”)
  • Cyprus wine museum
Day 4 Troodos (Mountainous region in central Cyprus)

Mount Olympos is the highest peak in Cyprus at 6402 feet above sea level

  • Agios Ioannis Lambadistis Monastery is an UNESCO heritage site and dates back to the 11th century.
  • Archangel Church in Pedoulas and Wine press in Lofou (Limassol)
Day 5 Lefkaria & Omodos

Overnight: Troodos

  • Lefkara village and learn how to make handmade lace; meet with silversmiths
  • Visit with winemakers at Anama Concept
  • Return to the mountaintop village of Omodos and tour a family-run vineyard and learn how to make Commandaria and other local grape varieties
  • Free time and shopping/strolling in the pedestrian-friendly, bougainvillea-lined village
Day 6 Nicosia tour (SOUTH AND NORTH)

Capital city of Nicosia is the last divided capital in the world. We will explore this historic, rich city by foot – both North & South sides (bring your passport!)

  • Buyukhan (camel caravan)
  • St. John’s Cathedral & Selimiye Mosque
  • An Old Turkish Hammam, Arabahmet Mosque
  • Zivania tasting in Bandabulya (an old market hall)
  • Time for shopping in the narrow streets filled with vendors (great shopping here!)
Day 7 Buyukkonuk

An eco-village in the Northeast area of the island

  • Demonstration on how carob molasses is made
  • Learn how to make artisan bread and cheese with local women of the village
Day 8 Farmers Market, Bellapais and Cooking with Chef Selim

  • Today we visit Bellapais (Translated as “Beautiful Lands” by the French Lusignans)
  • Visit one of the largest farmers markets on the island
  • Cooking morning with celebrated local chef Selim in beautiful Bellapais Gardens
  • Visit Bellapais Monastery and Village, including the home of Laurence Durrell
  • Enjoy coffee and a chat under the Tree of Idleness
Day 9 Famagusta / Salamis / Saint Barnabus

  • Eastern most city of the island, Famagusta was a famous port city
  • Guided tour through Salamis, where Saint Paul toured
Day 10 Guzelyurt and Lefke (Western cities)

  • Roman mosaics in Christian basilicas
  • Omorphou: St Mamas monastery: icon and archaeological museum
  • Ambelikou: traditional lunch in one of the two eco-villages of North Cyprus
  • Visit a local beekeeper and learn how this traditional skill survives. Tastings of local honey.
  • Dinner at Emma’s House, the village baker, to include a short cooking course
Day 11 Antiphonitis Church and Turtle Beach

  • Visit the beautiful ruins of Antiphonitis Church
  • Swim in the golden sands on Turtle Beach (Alagadi) – where caretta caretta turtles lay their eggs every year in protected waters
Day 12 Free Day

Relax by the beach or pool, shop in the city center, or join Claudia for a Spa Day

Day 13 Our Crusader Castle Day

  • Karmi village, hike from Karmi to St Hilarion, visit of St Hilarion, the mountainous castle built by Richard the Lionheart for his wife
  • Kyrenia Castle at the Yacht Harbour – free time to follow the castle tour
  • Sunset Cruise including fresh fish and mezzes (sailing dependent on weather)
Travel Day Return flight

  • Breakfast at hotel and then transfers to Larnaca for flight back to IAD
  • Shuttle waiting for us at IAD to return us to Charlottesville

Please have Euros on hand for incidentals. Credit cards are widely accepted all over the island. Cyprus is the easternmost part of the European Union. It is also a former British Colony. As such, English is widely spoken all over the island.

Claudia Hanna is a James Madison University Instructor of Eat Like a God or Goddess, learning how to replicate healthy, Mediterranean meals. Having grown up in Harrisonburg, Claudia was a management consultant for years before trading power suits for flip-flops and beach sarongs for a simpler, healthier life in Cyprus. Claudia lived in Cyprus for 8 years and has put together this tour as "a few of her favorite things" while on the Island of Aphrodite.
